Wednesday evening from 6-8:30, the Sisters hosted 20 of our employees for a wonderful dinner cooked by Sr. Kevin, Sr. Gabrielle Marie, Sr. Elizabeth and many more. Sr. Jania Maria had games all planned for our guests too, playing something of "A Minute to Win It" type games. Lots of laughter and clapping. Sr. Pia gave a very nice tribute of gratitude to our wonderful employees, after which she gave them gifts from the sisters. Sr. Rita Marie told them too, that there would be something in their paychecks. That will be a nice bonus, I'm sure.

Today our Brother Monks, Missionary Benedictines are celebrating the feast of St. Odilia after whom their monastery is named. We honor her today as the Patron of the monastery of the Missionary Benedictines in Germany, but also she is patron of those who have sight problems.

Let us pray today for those who are suffering from eye disease and blindness.

Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. She has been named the Patroness of the Americas. What are the lessons we should take from Our Lady?

According to tradition, on December 9, 1531 Juan Diego, a simple indigenous peasant, had a vision of a young woman while he was on a hill in the Tepeyac desert, near Mexico City. The lady told him to build a church exactly on the spot where they were standing. He told the local bishop, who asked for some proof. He went back and had the vision again. He told the lady that the bishop wanted proof, and she said "Bring the roses behind you." Turning to look, he found a rose bush growing behind him. He cut the roses, placed them in his poncho and returned to the bishop, saying he had brought proof. When he opened his poncho, instead of roses, there was an image of the young lady in the vision". Wonderful Advent Retreats

Today, Sr. Celine Schock, OSB, gave a wonderful presentation on the O Antiphons. She had 11 women in attendance who really found the information Sister gave as deepening their understanding of the Hymn, "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel", a very common Advent Hymn.
Tomorrow we have "Gaudete" Sunday -- Rejoicing day in watchful praise for the coming of the Savior in a special way in our hearts.

Have a wonderful Sunday! This is the day that the Prayer Shawl Ministry goes to visit the RCIA participants and give them each a prayer shawl. Deacon Ted will bless them and then they will be given to each of the catechumens.

From Friday, Nov. 25---Saturday, Nov. 26, Sr. Carole Ann facilitated a group of knitters and crocheters who met for an overnight retreat. The focus was to make chemo caps for some oranizations such as Onthology Clinic -- FRHS here in Norfolk, or UNMC-Omaha Oncology Clinic. There are other support groups that could receive some of the 34 caps that were finished before the participants went home. Every hour we prayed a short prayer for the cancer patients who need special prayer. And it is the custom during these retreats (this is the 3rd annual retreat) to spend time on personal spiritual enrichment, while praying with every stitch for the receiver of the item.

Today from 1-5 we have open house for the new bookstore here on first floor. Sr. Gabrielle Marie is manager of the Bookstore and she has made many of the Homemade quilts and bags. Her philosphy of the store is the minister to the public with Benedictine Hospitality. She has Sr. Bernardine and Sr. Paula aid her in times the store is open. They were also a huge help in getting the room in order.

Lectio Divina with the Sisters

Tomorrow, Sept. 12, at 7:30pm, you are invited to take part in prayer of Scripture with the Sisters. We will meet on 4th floor in St. Therese of Lisieux Mtg. Rm. Lectio Divina is a Latin term which means Holy Reading, and is practiced daily by monastics. We would like to share this intimate time with God with all who wish to participate. Come with an open heart and please bring your Bible.

Our New Fall Brochures

We received our new Fall Brochures from the printer yesterday. Oh, my, it is quite nicely done. The best thing as we begin this fall season, is to begin having Lectio Divina with the public. Yes, we have invited anyone to come on Monday evenings at 7:30pm to join the sisters in praying the Scriptures. This begins already Sept. 12.

October 1 to begin the month of the Holy Rosary, we will have a morning with discussion of the Rosary, ending with a visual rosary for healing.

The Center is also offering a 5-week glance at Catholicism. This is a nice look at the Catholic faith, giving essentials and explanations for those of us who may need some "blushing up", or just want to find out about this tradition if you are of another faith.

Praying With God as My Artist Retreat

Last weekend Sr. Gabrielle Marie held a workshop retreat at which four women participated. This was a great way to learn to use many different mediums with which to pray and find God in one's own "beauty". Some of the comments were: "There aren't words to describe this experience! Insightful, spiritual, fun and relaxing. A great time with women who all become friends. Creative adventure, amazing, stretching... allows God's voice to be heard. "The women were here from Friday evening to Sunday after lunch. They were all grateful for the graced weekend.

Not only was the Liturgy wonderful for the feast yesterday, but also the decor, the gifts, and the program at the end of the day. Sr. Pia was honored with a day of prayer, fun, and conversation. The young sisters and our volunteer, Miriam, from Germany gave a delightful skit to begin the evening, and then the sisters played Benedictine Saints Bingo. What fun! Sr. Veronica and Miriam then sang a German song while they played their guitars. Delightful!!

New Life at the Monastery

Sr. Catherine found the chrysalis of the monarch awhile ago, put it into a jar and we all watched -- it finally came out of its cocoon this morning at 10:30. It was still pretty tame when these photos were taken at 1pm. This one will be let go later today when all the sisters have had a chance to look at it. God is so good -- isn't it beautiful???

This is the day we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary's Assumption into heaven. She had led a life of complete purity, as her Son's all blessed mother. Now she is in heavenly union with the Son she bore, the Spirit Who overshadowed her, and the Father. her Creator. May we all one day be like her in her love of her Son, the abandonment to the Holy Spirit, and the gratitude to the Father.

Coming to the End of Summer

Since it is summer, we have several sisters visiting relatives, friends, and benefactors from California to Florida, from Michigan to New Mexico. With the many away, our prayer still sounds pretty good, but we sure do miss them in our community times.
I understand school is starting in some places, OMAHA for example. Wow, I remember when we didn't start school until after Labor Day -- way back when. We pray for all students and their teachers. Someone on Facebook said: Enjoy the quiet, BE the quiet. Here in the monastery we don't have any children going back to school, but we can celebrate the quiet 24/7. One of the perks of our lifestyle.
We are experiencing a nice cool day here in Norfolk, but expect some T-storms later in the day. For this blogger, it is a good time to prepare for presentations or classes, or maybe sew -- I won't go outside anyway.

Teens Pray with us

This morning, we had the privilege of having 9 young high school youth attend Mass with us. These young people had been at a camp in June with Sr. Fidelis Marie, and wanted to meet the sisters. Friday evening last week, they came and played cards and other games with the sisters in St. Benedict's Mtg. Rm. After the evening of fun, they asked if they could come and pray with us too. So this morning they so nicely helped us celebrate the Mass in honor of Alphonsus de Ligouri, after which they got a tour of the monastery and Spirituality Center and a small breakfast. Some of the kids had to take off for work, so they weren't all treated to the tour or breakfast. Now, interestingly enough, parents want to come and meet us too, pray with us and perhaps play Pitch or Canasta, Scrabble or Sequence with the sisters. We surely do welcome you to come and recreate with us. How special is that!!

Visiting Priest

Fr. Quentin, our chaplain, has gone on a vacation with his family -- a cruise up the Inside Passage to Alaska. While he is gone, we have a visiting priest, Fr. Pasto Mauki from Kenya, who is saying Mass for us and the residents of St. Joseph's Nursing Home across the street. Some time ago, the prioress of Paramiho, Tanzania priory, Sr. Rosann, gave this priory a set of African made Vestments. So, Fr. Pastor is using them in the colors of the day. We are so blessed to have him with us.

Visitors Have Left Norfolk

Yesterday morning, Sr. Pia took the two Rome Visitors to Omaha to the airport to fly back to Rome. We had a wonderful 3 weeks with them, and now another priory of sisters will be able to enjoy them as they make their next visitation.
It has been extremely hot and humid here the last few days again, so we haven't been outside much -- just going from the house to the car, etc.

Please pray for our Sr. Dorothy who is not feeling well, and Sr. Kevin who is still harboring back problems. Sr. Paula had hip surgery on Monday, and also needs prayers. Blessings to all our families, Oblates, benefactors, and friends for the kindnesses and joys you bring us.

End of Visitation Today

Sr. Adelaida, Sr. Terese

The Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Norfolk, have had an opportunity during the month of July, to speak with and get to know, two of the General Councilors from Rome: Sr. Adelaida Ygubay, Vicoress General, and Sr. Terese Zamali. They will give their own parting words this evening to all of the sisters gathered here in Norfolk. It has been a good experience for the whole community. The sisters were able to show us power point presentations on several of the priories all over the world: Seoul, Manila, Bulgaria. Last night Sr. Michael Marie, prioress of Nairobi, showed a presentation on the priory in Karen, Kenya. We have been blessed with continuity in our congregation, seeing the ministries of others across the world.
May they all have a safe trip to their next visitation, the next priory. Blessings!

The Wisdom of Solomon

In the first reading in today's liturgy, we hear of the wisdom of Solomon early on, as a young man. Even in his youth, when told by God that he would give him anything he asked for, Solomon asked that:

"Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart
to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong....."
"I do as you requested.
I give you a heart so wise and understanding"

Would that we would also ask for the wisdom to know and understand, and act upon these gifts in our own relationships in family, church, and workplace. Wouldn't the world be a gentler place to live?

They are certainly not the weeds we used to fight on the farm. We are blessed to use them to decorate chapel, dining rooms, guest rooms, and hallways.

Today we celebrate the feast of the "Apostle to the Apostles", Mary Magdalen. Mary, cured of 7 evil spirits, was one of the faithful followers of the Lord, and ministered to him and the twelve. She is also blessed to have been the first to meet the Lord upon his resurrection. We pray to St. Mary Magdalen that we too may, not only have gratitude for forgiveness, but also that we may serve Christ in all of his people.

Message from St. Benedict

Back in the 6th Century, St. Benedict wrote this as the first sentence in his Holy Rule. It is still relevant and necessary to find God by listening, not only to those around us, but also to the small voice of God in the silence of our heart.

A Day Without Water

Today was supposed to be our day for an all day outing at the lake near Stanton, but as the heat would have it we had to cancel. When this had been scheduled, the maintenance guys thought it would be a good day to fix some leaks in the house. So--today we have buckets, coolers, and tubs full of water in case we need it for something. Drinking water is provided for all of us. Now we know what it is like in the missions of Africa--not having running water always at our disposal. A good lesson in poverty. Of course this means we don't have to do dishes either.

Damaged Window Screens

During one of the last bad hail storms that we've had this spring/summer, the screens on the North and West sides of the monastery have been severely ruined. So, they are being taken down to be "restrung", if that is the correct wording. We only have about 150 windows on those two sides, so our maintenance men will have their job cut out for them. Thanks to our wonderful employees.

The Celebration of Lucille Davis' Life

The funeral of Lucille Davis will be in our chapel this morning at 10:30am. As an Oblate, it is the prerogative of the family to have the funeral Mass in the Missionary Benedictine community chapel. The wake was well attended last evening, and many wonderful things were told about our dear Lucille. How generous she was with her time, how grateful she was for your time, and how all around HAPPY this woman was through so many trials and hardships. I wish the family our sympathy, and hope that the fruits of Lucille's life will be visible in all family members. They have a mother, grandmother, aunt, etc., to be very proud of. May she rest in peace in the arms of her God.

Desert Day

Today, all the sisters are having a "Desert Day", meaning a day set aside for prayer and reflection. We schedule the third Sunday of the month for this time away with God. Some sisters go for nature walks to praise the Lord for all He has done for us, some take extra time in front of the Blessed Sacrament, and others pray in their rooms. It is a day which we would like to share with persons outside of the monastery, as it brings peace and calm in everyday life. Everyone needs to "come aside for a little while" in order for God to speak to us.

I was just thinking this morning as I was walking around the wild flowers patch east of the monastery, that some of the sunflowers were facing heavenward in praise to the Father for His gift of the sun. Then I found some which were bowing their heads in praise of the Father's gift of the Son.

Oblate Lucille Davis Dies

One of the first women in St. Mary's parish to become an Oblate of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters has passed away after some years of suffering. Lucille Davis was a delightful member of the parish, and a constant reminder of stability each time she came to Oblate meetings, even if she was in a wheelchair. She was a member of the parish Prayer Shawl ministry, and made prayer shawls until last week. I visited her on Wednesday, prayed with her and her daughters, and knew it would not be long before the Lord of her life, took her to His very own. Bless you, Lucille, and may God grant you eternal bliss.

We sisters had Dr. Jim Murphy and his wife come for a wonderful supper this evening to thank him for his dentistry service to the sisters over the years. He and Sherry joined us for Mass and Vespers after which we had them join us in the sisters' dining room. The meal was really a delight, and at the end, Sr. Pia, prioress, gave him a gift of a lovely quilt designed and quilted by Sr. Gabrielle Marie. The evening was a great honor to him, as we gave him our blessing, and sang the Raeville Ave Maria. He will never forget this "Retirement Dinner". May God bless you, Dr. Murphy, for all you've done for us (and our teeth).

On the Feast of St. Benedict, July 11, 2011, twenty-one Missionary Benedictine Sisters from Norfolk attended the installation of Fr. Mauritius as new Prior of the monastery in Schuyler. He was installed by Abbot Michael Reepen from Münsterschwarzach, the motherhouse of the Schuyler monks. Fr. Mauritius follows the 17-year Prior, Fr. Germar, who now will retire.
As part of the Solemn Vespers, Abbot Michael gave the Holy Rule of St. Benedict to Fr. Mauritius as a symbol of his leadership in becoming the new prior of Christ the King Mission House. We were privileged to also attend the dinner which followed, honoring both Fr. Mauritius and Fr. Germar. Congratulations and support to Fr. Mauritius, and gratitude to Fr. Germar for his many kindnesses to his Norfolk sisters.

Sr. Dorothy -- renewal of vows

The Norfolk Community celebrated 70 years of profession with our Sister Dorothy Koenig, OSB. Her brother Felix and his wife, Lucy, from Scottsbluff attended the Eucharist and meals with the community. Sr. Dorothy read her renewal of profession of vows with the vigor of a much younger sister than she is -- she is 90 years old. God has blessed Sr. Dorothy, and in her we all are blessed by Our Lord. Thank you Sr. Dorothy for all of the years you have given to the Missionary Benedictine Sisters. Have a blessed day with our prayers for you!!

Sisters' Retreat

Sunday evening the sisters of Immaculata Monastery began their 7-day retreat. In the afternoon, 7 sisters from other communities arrived to share the week with us. Fr. Richard Gielow, CM, a Vincentian Father, is our Retreat Director. He comes from Independence, MO, with a title of the retreat: The Main Thing is to keep the Main Thing, the Main Thing. It is not a "heady" retreat -- it goes straight to the heart. We are enjoying his stories, his humor, and his complete interest in our spiritual growth. I was able to give two presentations in Omaha, one at Via Christe, and the other at St. Cecilia Institute last Thursday afternoon and evening. While there, we all got to go over to the Cathedral and see the life-size traveling Pieta of Michaelangelo. The whole day was amazing, and then to be able to see this statue was a marvel. We are so blessed to have a place of solitude where there are no "beepers" interrupting our prayer and thought process.

Last night Sacred Heart Prayer Shawl ministry met here, as we do every month. In January we had a 2-day retreat, as posted earlier. At that retreat, Gail - from Benedict - started a suggested shawl, and it was just lovely. Mary Pribnow, one of our members, took the pattern also, got some yarn very similar to what Gail used, and she finished this one last night. I want to share this with you as it is just a sample of the good the ministry does for the sick, elderly, or anyone who suffers in any way. This group is part of the Parish Health Ministry. Sr. Carole Ann, Sr. Paula, and Sr. Veronica Therese are part of this parish group. Several of our Oblates are also members.

Yesterday afternoon we received our first instruction/tutorial on our new quilting machine. This was really fun. First we did a free quilting motion -- to see how it all felt. Then we tried our hand at making stars in the blocks. Sure!!! All the times I made stars on duddling paper; do you think I could "quilt" a star? It is harder than it looks. About an hour and a half into the tutorial, Monica added the laser light so we could follow a template on the side, looking at the light and moving the machine. That was a little easier than the "star". Anyway, Sr. Madeleine and I also had our turns on this awesome machine. Now we can do things for the missions, poor, families, friends, and maybe even once in awhile -- for ourselves. Thanks be to God for this addition to the quilt room -- St. Anne's Rm.

Today is the day the ladies from the quilt shop in Omaha will be here for a 3-hour tutorial on our new quilting machine. I will have photos later today. This is really exciting for us, as we like to make the tops, but are not real fond of hand-quilting them. So, hopefully, this will be an item that can be used to bring in donations for the missions. We are pretty excited about this new "tool of good works" in the monastery.

At Holy Mass this morning we heard in Father Quentin's message, that the day is set aside for prayer for all engaged couples, and married couples who are united to each other in love. At the time of intercessions, I personally tried to remember family members and friends who need special support in their lives of "togetherness" Let us keep all couples in our prayers every day, but especially on this one, that the love of the Father for the Son, be the source of all of their love.

Nine women met January 21-22, 2011 to pray and knit or crochet prayer cloths or shawls. Sr. Carole Ann facilitated these two days with a power point presentation bringing to light the garments/cloths that Jesus used to show compassion, love, and humility. Now it is our turn to use our gifts to imitate Jesus and wrap those who need our compassion in the shawl of prayer.

90 Years old today -- January 19. Yes, today we celebrate the life and ministries of Sr. Alberta who is 90 years old. All the sisters were able to sing Birthday Wishes to her last night at supper, and then this noon for our desert, we had a DQ ice cream cake. Sr. Alberta, in her 90th year, after many different ministries in her life, and mission to Tanzania, she now volunteers two mornings a week at the Orphan Grain Train, packing clothing and supplies for the poor all over the world.

Tour of Homes

Vavak's Plate

Immaculata Monastery & Spirituality Center will be host to those participating in the Tour of Homes put on by Sacred Heart/St. Mary's Parish. They had asked us to accept and display nativity scenes that come in from any parishioner who would like us to show their family's creche. Friday and Saturday we set up near 20 around the monastery, in places that the public will view this afternoon from 1-5pm. To me the most unique is the one our Oblates, Ron & JoAnn Vavak brought. It is a scene in bas relief on a plate. (See photo)

One of the largest came from the home of Leon & Beth Gentrup, which we displayed on the small altar on fourth floor. The displayed scenes are from all over the world, in every size and shape, and wood to finest china. We are blessed to have them in our monastery.

The First Sunday of Advent was initiated with the prayer and lighting of the first Advent candle at First Vespers, November 27. The second candle will be lit in the "statio" hallway and processed in with the sisters this Saturday for First Vespers of the Second Sunday of Advent. These are all reminders of the coming of Christ -- to celebrate His Birthday, to wait for His coming on the Last Day, and in the present in the lives of all of His faithful. Not only was the chapel decorated nicely for the day, but so were many of our sisters who found their way down to the kitchen to help with the meal. Sr. Gabrielle Marie, Sr. Paula, and Sr. Marita are the ones who made the assessment that "the bird" was ready to be taken apart.

The Sisters went into the dining room after our Day Office, quietly, and then while we got our food from the buffet line, music played with a Thanksgiving Theme. After all were seated around the tables, conversation was abounding.

We had evening Mass with a visiting priest, Fr. Lange, and then to end the day, we had a movie/meal in St. Gertrud's. It was truly a wonderful day in Norfolk.

We said a short Compline, and then went to bed.

Sr. Pia Portmann, OSB and Sr. Gabrielle Marie Oestreich, OSB, attended the Mission Congress 2010 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from October 28-31, 2010. The city had opened its doors to missionaries from all over the country, and Sr. Pia told us that there were missionaries from other parts of the world present as well. Many different cultures, cuisines, performing arts, and liturgies were experienced by the participants. The two sisters found the events to be truly invigorating and were able to celebrate their own sense of "mission" and bring back enthusiasm to the community of Norfolk. The event was sponsored by the Catholic Mission Forum, United States Catholic Mission Association.

It is now official: With all the papers signed and prayers for closure said, the hospital, clinic, and care center previously owned and operated by the Missionary Benedictine Sisters is now under the ownership of Essentia Health System, with the Benedictine Sisters of Duluth. Pictured are sisters who are working or have worked in Graceville over the years or were board members. Beautiful Fall Morning

I went down for breakfast after Mass and wasn't paying any attention to the morning happenings. I guess I was more interested in getting some breakfast. From where I was sitting, eating my peanut-butter and jelly sandwich, God was speaking to the whole city with beautiful remarks. I guess they were "marks", not remarks, but never-the-less, there was a message of painted wonder in the eastern sky. I ran (really, I walked fast) to get the camera to etch the beauty of the oranges, yellows, and bright red of the sunrise where it could be shared with others. But just as I walked out the back door, the whole vision changed, the sun had taken over and passed the color to the north. Well, as you can guess, by the time I got that on camera, the color had faded again, against the blue sky and white clouds. I guess you just have to believe me -- I have no photographic proof. But God did wonders in our Nebraska sky this morning telling us we are dearly loved.

Saturday, October 16, 2010, was a wonderful celebration, honoring two of our sisters. Sr. Monica Backes has 50 years of profession as a Missionary Benedictine Sister, and Sr. Marie Andre Shon made her profession 25 years ago. With Fr. Quentin Kathol, OSB our chaplain as celebrant, the two sisters renewed their vows of Conversatio Morem, Stability, and Obedience before Sr. Pia Portmann, Prioress. Fr. Volker Fetter, OSB from Schuyler, concelebrated at the Eucharistic Celebration. After the Homily, the two sisters read from, and signed, their profession cards, followed by singing together the "Sucsipe" that they sang on their first profession day. A lovely meal was served to the sisters and about 20 guests. May God reward these two good sisters for their service in the community, and may they have many more wonderful years as Missionary Benedictine Sisters.

The Oblates were welcomed Saturday October 9, for an overnight retreat directed by Fr. Xavier. On Sunday morning, both Fr. Quentin, our chaplain, and Fr. Xavier concelebrated Holy Mass for the sisters, oblates, and parishioners in attendance. The days were filled with conferences on the Rule of St. Benedict, and how to live it as a lay person. Some of the sisters also attended the conferences.

This is the day that Sr. Carmel, former Sub-Prioress and Secretary to Sr. Kevin and Sr. Pia Portmann, left to visit with her sister in California and then on to Manila. She will be working at various ministries while she waits and tries to get her VISA to return to our priory after one year. We will miss our dear sister, who seemed to always know when something needed to be done or someone needed help. Invited guests included our Oblates and former members of the community. Our brother monks in Schuyler also had a wonderful representation to celebrate with us. After the meal the sisters gave each guest a remembrance of the day -- a mug with the logo of our Monastery.

The early beginnings of our community here in Nebraska was given in skit by a group of mighty talented performers. The Academy Awards committee will be evaluating the great talent of our sisters. A prayerful power point presentation was put together with help from Sr. Pia Portmann and Sr. Rita Marie. This also gave great summary of our history. Thanks to all who made the day so memorable.

"FALL" is in the air

Yes, FALL is here!
I traveled to Omaha last week, and some harvesting has been started. And some of the beans are readying themselves to be "plucked" as well. What a glorious time of year (what time isn't)!! I took one of our sisters to Eppley to catch a flight to Portland, and stopped to eat my "Subway" over at Carter Lake. I just sat and watched the water slap the sides of the bank, and one larger boat that was just cruising very slowly. It was one of those really nice days when "cruising" was a good activity.

We are also in preparation for our great day next Friday -- September 24 -- Foundation Day of our Congregation 125 years ago. Archbishop Lucas will be our celebrant with two other priests at the Eucharist, which ends a whole year of commemoration of our founding. We have invited former members of the community to join us in the celebration, as well at our Oblates. The afternoon includes a program: a power-point presentation which highlights our congregations ministries from 1884 (our beginnings in Germany -- see our website: www.norfolk-osb.org ) to present day here in Norfolk. I will write more after it has happened. God has so blessed us!!

The quilters from St. Bonaventure's Quilting Group from Raeville, brought the finished quilt that they quilted for Sr. Carmel. There were several sisters on hand to greet them, ooo & aaaa over the beautiful quilt. It took Sr. Carmel about 3 years to embroider the top, and about 3 months for the ladies to quilt and bind it. It is a thing of beauty for sure.

The ladies stayed for a tour of the monastery, cookies and coffee, and of course, lots of conversation. It was a joy to have them here for the few hours that they could spare. Bless them for their creative work.

Today being the feast of St. Pius X, we are celebrating the nameday of our Prioress, Sr. Pia Portmann, OSB. We had a festive meal already last evening, but today, there will be Eucharistic Celebration in her honor along with a free day for the whole community. We will have common breakfast, and then around 10am, there are groups of sisters who are going to start playing cards. We still have our jobs to do, but there will be time for fun too. Happy Feast Day, Sr. Pia!!

August 7-8 was a two day workshop on Transformative Aging, presided over by Sr. Ann Billard, OLM, whose community is in Charleston, South Carolina. Sister came from a wonderful background and gave us many wonderful hints on how to grow old gracefully. This is a quote from her online brochure:

The novices are in seclusion from the guests and the community until the time of profession which is 10:30 this morning. There is anticipation in the air, as could be seen at common breakfast, and much "adither" which should be on days like this. Last minute practice of the procession, etc. The habits of the new (to be) sisters have lain in the chapel having been put there last evening by the two novices. This was the culmination ritual of the vigil, where they were asked to show their intention of consecrating their lives as Missionary Benedictine Sisters.

Last evening we got the news that Novice Sarah's father is in the hospital with a serious infection. He had been in ICU, but is now out, but not out of the hospital. He and Sarah's mother will not be able to attend her first profession. We ask all of your prayers for Sarah at this time, and special prayers for her mom and dad who also are suffering because they will not be able to witness her gift to God. Pray for the whole Miller Family (Sarah is an only child). Thank you!

Sr. Carole Ann, Sr. Inviolata, and Sr. Jane attended the 50th Jubilee of these three Benedictine Sisters in Yankton this morning. It was a wonderful ceremony, especially seeing the surprise on Sr. Jacquiline's face when she saw the two Kenyan Sisters with whom she lived when in Kenya on her sabbatical. The day was truly blessed with wonderful liturgy and meal following. It was very nice to visit old friends among the sisters.

Today, July 24, 2010, marks the end of the two novices' canonical novitiate. I don't know this for sure, but my guess is that Sr. Gabrielle Marie, Gina and Sarah, just went out for dinner. And I would not be wrong in guessing that they were on their way to McDonalds. I know this because I'm sitting in the front office with the monitor of all of the outdoor cameras -- and I SAW THEM get in a car and OFF THEY WENT!! How fun!! Remember they go into retreat after supper, so they will be missed for a week. A week from today they will be Sister.............and Sister...............I'll be the first to let you know who is who.

This is the rack on which the 12 habits are now hanging until they are given to the newly professed. On the day of profession, since Sr. Paula will be at a family reunion, I will be the one honored to fold the black habits and scapulars, and lay them on a table in the sanctuary. They will be presented to each woman after she has made her temporary vows. She will then go out of the chapel, take her novice garb off, and put on the "new woman", as a Missionary Benedictine Sister. Their spirits are very ready for this big day also. May God be with them.

Today, we sewed the last stitch on the 12 habits for the upcoming newly professed. We were ready to sing the Halleluia Chorus from Handel's Messiah about 11:30am this morning. It was wonderful to be able to do all of that for these young women. May God bless them very specially during this next week -- their profession retreat.

Sr. Paula and I are just about finished with the 12 habits and 2 scapulars, that we made for the upcoming newly professed. I have to put a colar on one of the gray dresses, and then the two novices will be all set for July 31 -- Profession. Pray for them -- they go into retreat on Saturday evening, the 24th.

Forgiveness/Healing--Walk of Prayer

Because of the bulletin publication, and word of mouth, we sisters had TEN participants in the Walk for Forgiveness and Healing on the Labyrinth. Six sisters were there to guide those praying, and then offer beverages. What a great way to begin the week, praying for healing and forgiveness. Next Sunday and we will WALK for our COUNTRY.

Labyrinth Walk --
This Sunday evening we will have another Prayer Walk on the Labyrinth. The theme for this Sunday's 7pm prayer will be HEALING/FORGIVENESS. All are welcome -- and bring a friend. Even if this is your first time to come to the monastery, you will be welcomed and helped along the way.

DEACONS' WIVES MEET

The Deacons' Wives of Rural Omaha Archdiocese are meeting here this weekend for their yearly retreat. We met and welcomed 39 women dedicated to the vocation of the deaconate. They will be attending Lauds with us both Saturday and Sunday mornings, and celebraing Holy Mass with the Sisters each day as well. We welcome them and pray that their weekend retreat with Theresa Monaghan will be specially blessed.

Friday, July 16, the Deacons Wives of Rural Archdiocese will be having their annual retreat here at the Spirituality Center. We are expecting 38 women under the direction of Theresa Monaghan of Omaha. Many blessings on their weekend desert time.

Saturday, there will be an Environmental Safety workshop for the Hispanics in the area. The program begins at 9am and is taught in Spanish.

Sunday, July 18, we will be having the second in the series of Labyrinth walks. This Walk will be with the prayer focus: Healing and Forgiveness. We welcome all. Also on the 18th, the Hispanic Community will be celebrating KERMES on our North Lawn. The sisters will attend that to support their efforts.

Last night we had our first prayer night featuring the Labyrinth. The prayer focus for our first of three "Path of Prayer" evenings was: Care of the Earth. Next week we will do "Healing/Forgiving", and the last one will be "For our Country". We had three participants last night -- pray for more in the upcoming weeks

New Pastor

Fr. Dan Andrews -- New Pastor
Sr. Margaret, Sr. Gabrielle Marie and I went to Mass at 5:30 this evening for the Installation of Fr. Dan Andrews as the new pastor of Sacred Heart/St. Marys Parish. Archbishop George Lukas of the Omaha Archdiocese was there to make to presentation to the parish of their new SHEPHERD. After the celebration of Mass, there was a reception over at the Parish Hall for him, where we got to meet him, congratulate him, and invite him to our monastery for prayer and supper some evening. I had not met the Archbishop yet, so I was very happy when he stopped by our table to greet those seated. The liturgy was VERY elegant, not only the choir was good, but the accompaniment with horn, trombone and organ was awesome for our church. Congratulations Karl, on your liturgical expertice and use of local talent.

Happy Independence Day

Yes, today is the 4th of July, and much celebration in that regard, but the real celebration was the 60th jubilee of Sr. Cecilia Polt, at our 7am Mass. Many of her relatives were able to attend, from near and far, and will be here to "picnic" with the sisters most of this festive day. Blessings, dear Sister Cecilia.
Also--Sr. Andrea Polt, her sister, is being honored by her family for her 50 years as a Tanzanian missionary. Thanks, Sister, for your untiring ministry.

Happy Feast Day to All!
The Divine Office if really beautiful today.

We now are asking for prayers regarding Hildegard House. The rains have made the little streams that are near the house, large and destructive to their own banks. We ask that you pray that our house may not be touched by damage of water, wind, or fire. Thank you.

Here in Norfolk, all seems to be also in flux. We have several sisters on vacation, and several are on visits to family. Our community is REALLY small these days.
